Freshman Experience
Autumn Quarter Experience
My first quarter experience at UW illustrated through various experiences and learning curves.
1. Undergraduate Course Planning Assignment
Despite the daunting and overwhelming thought of planning my undergraduate academic path, this assignment was a visual and realistic gateway to explore all my options. Before this assignment, I was keen on majoring in chemistry, however, after discovering it would be difficult to complete all my requisite classes, I switched to biochemistry, which allows me to explore more of my passions. Additionally, I was able to explore a realistic academic pathway to my goals, which opened the door to opportunities, such as study abroad. After realizing it would be difficult to complete my honors requirements, I started searching for study abroad programs that not only coincide with honors, but with my desired minor as well. As opposed to being overwhelming or stressful, this assignment provided a sense of security and allowed me to explore my passions more realistically.

2. Football Games
A sense of community and the ability to lead a balanced lifestyle were crucial factors in my decision to attend the University of Washington. In Canada, football games, pep rallies, and events that embody school pride are a more rare occurrence among universities. While providing me with a sense of belonging and unity, attending these events has allowed me to build networks and foster deeper connections with my peers. Additionally, balance between my academics, extracurriculars, health, and friendships is something I value greatly. Football games are a representation of not only the importance of unity, but also balance and taking time for myself.
3. Chemistry Lab
I came to university with a direction, but not a planned destination. Growing up I wanted to go into the medical field, however, after delving deeper into professional industries and gaining more experience, I realized there was no passion or desire for me to pursue a career in medicine. Taking classes, such as chemistry at UW, while exploring STEM RSO’s such as the pre-pharmacy club has strengthened my interest in chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry. This realization has led me to explore further into research, study abroad, and various experiential learning opportunities to gain a greater breadth and depth of knowledge.
